Katie Pedro
1.Don’t sexually harass girls in the office. Office is not night clubs. I had several girls in my team came complaining the expats in the company incessantly sending messages, asking them out, lingering around their desks every day, even tried to kiss her. In some cases the expat was her father’s age. The girls were too afraid to tell them off. I had to ask them to stop. I had one expat comment on my legs when I was conducting an exit interview! WTF.

4.If you have a problem and complain to a service personnel, the service person will smile at you. They were trained to always smile to the customers no matter how upset he/she is. They don’t mean to laugh at your face. My husband spent several years to finally understand that smile is not mean to be disrespectful. Don’t abuse the service person because of that. I saw a foreigner scream at a girl at the airport counter “Why are you laughing!!!” . They were smiling because that their work protocol. If you scream too much, most likely the person will smile, slowly back away and disappear. You got no one to service you.

5.Do not lump all Chinese together as if they are monolithic one. No one group of Chinese can represent all. We are different people with different local culture and dialect. Understand you are curious about everything, but experiencing a few similar incidences and judging that you know what all Chinese are about is not appreciated. You will hear something you don’t like, such as “China is very big blah blah blah”.

[Edit] one comment suggest me soften the content. I want to clarify I do not mean all foreigners in China behave the same. Majority of foreigners lived in China behaved respectfully and normal (We all got angry or frustrated sometimes, that’s normal). The first three points are harsher, but I don’t meant to hint all foreigners doing it, I don’t mean only foreigners doing it either. But they are my true experience. I want to find a way to vent it out. So I do want to say there are many other expats who are sincere, professional, and decent in my former company. They remain my good friends.
